Considering an Apprentice? – Here’s why you should

Do you think employing an apprentice is too time-consuming and costly? It might be time to think again following reforms to the Apprenticeship Levy. Small businesses are now able to benefit from increased funding to take on apprentices. On the 1st May this year the Government introduced changes to the Apprenticeship Levy to make it less complex. It gives employers more control over designing, choosing and paying for apprenticeship training. It aims to double the number of apprenticeships since 2010.

Investing in an apprentice

An apprenticeship offers businesses an opportunity to train an individual for a specific role and skill-set. This can free up existing members of staff to take on more responsibility as the company grows. Apprentices can bring fresh ideas to a company and come with a real desire to learn and kick-start their career.

What help is there?

The government are supporting businesses by only asking those with a pay bill over £3million a year to pay the Apprenticeship Levy.

Businesses with lower pay bills will pay just 10% towards the cost of training and assessment. The businesses will need to agree a payment schedule directly with the training organisation.

The government will pay the rest (90%) up to the funding band maximum. They’ll pay it directly to the training organisation.

Small businesses can also be eligible for extra funding. This depends on both your and the apprentice’s circumstances, for example if they are 16-18 years old.

There are several training providers that the government can put you in touch with. These providers will help you identify local, suitable training and advertise your role. They can also review the applicants for suitability in the first instance.

The Facts

Apprentices must be 16 or over and combine working with studying to gain skills and knowledge in a specific job.

In return for government funding, apprentices should work alongside experienced staff. They should be taught job specific skills and be given time to study during their week. They can be new or existing staff.
